IAPG Safety Panel Meeting of the Chemical Working Group 2020

The Interagency Advanced Power Group (IAPG) Chemical Working Group (CWG) Safety Panel Meeting is scheduled for February 11-12, 2020 (revised dates), at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.  The Safety Panel, formerly the Lithium Battery Technical Safety Group, is celebrating their 100th Meeting!

The Safety Panel Meeting is a forum for networking and candidly sharing new technical advances in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.  Technology focus areas include primary, secondary, and reserve batteries; primary and regenerative fuel cells; electrochemical capacitors; hybrid systems; advanced concepts; and power management systems.

The meeting will be held in the M.E. Auditorium, located in Building 255.  As noted on the map, this is a short walk from the front gate, the Del Monte Hotel, or the Hyatt.

Parking is not available immediately at the building!  The closest parking lot is reserved for NPS Professors and will be full.  Parking near the Del Monte Hotel might be the nearest available on base.  It might be closer to park at the Hyatt or on 10th Street.  Walking from either hotel is strongly recommended. 

Meeting Attendees/Guests – Please Review Carefully

Attendance at the Safety Panel Meeting is limited to:

  1. U.S. citizens AND foreign nationals.
  2. Government employees, includes Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignees.
  3. On-site contractors from a Government operated laboratory working under a Non-Disclosure Agreement. Employer must be precluded from competing for open R&D solicitation (captive).
  4. Employees of Federally Funded R&D Centers (FFRDCs). This only includes employees of the FFRDC, not the administering entity.  View the master list of FFRDCs.
  5. Government Contractors – those currently holding grants or contracts with a U.S. Government agency. This would include academic institutions, as well as on-site and off-site performers.

Requests for PARTICIPATION of non-U.S. government employees must be submitted in writing, and sent to Michael Brundage and Julie SimmonsThe deadline for requests for foreign nationals is January 7, 2020.  The deadline for requests for U.S. government contractors is January 21, 2020.  Requests received after these dates cannot be accepted.

During the registration process, please ensure you are providing your full legal name as it appears on the government issued ID you will be using for identification at NPS. 

All presenters, as well as meeting attendees, are required to register for the meeting.  No walk-in/day-of meeting registrations will be permitted.

Visitor Requests – Foreign Nationals

All foreign visitor requests must be submitted through the visitor’s respective embassy for processing through the Department of Defense (DoD) Foreign Visit System (FVS) and the Navy International Program Office (NIPO) NIPORECEPTIONIST@NAVY.MIL.  Requests should be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the proposed visit (certain countries may require 45 days or longer). Upon notification from NIPO, NPS Command Security Manager will coordinate follow-on actions with Naval Support Activity Monterey Security personnel to ensure timely and accurate completion.  The deadline for submission is January 13, 2020.

Visitor Requests – U.S. Citizens/Non-DoD Attendees

Visitors who DO NOT POSSESS a DOD Common Access Card (CAC) will be required to submit an access request SECNAV Form 5512-1. (This PDF form will not open in your browser. Please download the form to your computer and open in Acrobat Reader to fill it out out.)  Since the form contains Personally Identifiable Information (PII), they should be submitted via DOD SAFE.  You will need to contact Andy Andersen mandersen@nps.edu and request a drop off code.  Ensure that the SSN is included and the form is initialed, signed and dated on page two.  The deadline for submission is January 27, 2020.

Badging/Gate Access

Visitors must check in upon arrival at the Visitor Control Center located at the Sloat Main Gate.  Please note the hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 – 11:30 a.m., and 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Additional information may be found at NPS Gate Access Services.

All U.S. citizens/persons must present official government-issued photo identification (driver’s license or passport) before being granted entry to NPS.  Foreign National Visitors (FNV) must present their passport and another form of photo identification.

If you would like to present at the Safety Panel Meeting, please contact Julie Simmons with your presentation title.  Please note, presentations should follow Distribution A (approved for public release) guidelines to accommodate foreign national attendees.  It is the responsibility of each presenter to obtain necessary approvals prior to delivery of presentations.

Final presentations in MS PowerPoint or Adobe PDF format are to be sent to Renee O’Brokta by COB February 4, 2020.  All presentations must be received in advance for download to the presentation computer.

Food Accommodations

While there is no registration fee, $15.00 per person, per day, will be collected through the online registration process to cover costs for beverages and snacks provided during the meeting.  Lunch will be at your own expense.  Onsite lunch options include NPS cafeteria, Starbucks, Café Del Monte, El Prado Dining and more.

If your attendance plans change, please contact Renee O’Brokta to cancel your registration to avoid unnecessary charges.  The deadline for cancellation is February 6, 2020.  Refunds cannot be issued after this date.

Group Dinner

A no-host group dinner is planned for the evening of Tuesday, February 11, 2020.  Charges will be billed individually.  Please indicate on your registration if you would like to attend so an approximate number of attendees can be provided to the restaurant in advance. 

“Corkz and Forkz”

The MWR is hosting a “Corkz and Forkz” event February 12, 2020, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.  Enjoy a walking tour of the historic Hotel Del Monte while enjoying fine beverages paired with appetizers prepared by Executive Chef Lovejoy.  Cost is $45 – $55 per person and pre-registration is required.
